My story started in the summer of 1972. I enlisted two days after my 17th birthday. Then the M-16 A1 was the standard battle rifle and we only had 20-round Magazines., and our load bearing equipment was made from heavy-duty cotton with steel fasteners. Unlike the polyester, and plastic equipment issued today. I took a 10-year break in service after my first enlistment, and re-enlisted to become a Drill Sergeant. I retired on my 60th birthday with 33 years’ time in service.
