EMERGENCY FOOD AND WATER UPDATE
Week six Learning Objectives 11 & 12 the needs for Food and Water were reviewed.
“Nothing is better than going home to family and eating good food and relaxing.– Irina Shayk”
The grocery list provided is intended to give about 2000 kal per person per day.
Commercially canned food may be eaten out of the can without warming.
The grocery list is for a basic three-day food supply.
This list directly contradicts many current thoughts on emergency food lists being published today. It does not need gardening, canning, grain grinding, animal husbandry or foraging. It is intended for the Urban Dweller who has no intent to channel their inner hunter gatherer.
Please keep in mind Items marked with an asterisk “*” should be purchased for each member of the household.
If you have two in the household then buy two of the same items. If you have five in the household you will buy five of the same items.
I mention this because some people are seriously cheep and are more concerned with the cost of putting the package together over the utility and usefulness of the package.
I recall after Hurricane Irma was over and the stores reopened, the staff were restocking the shelves with grocery carts full of food returned by people who wanted their money back.
This brings to light a couple of different possible concepts;
1.People seriously over purchased because they had no plan or idea what would be needed.
2.People spent money they could not afford to spend because they had no plan and did not prepare well in advance.
This is your opportunity not to be one of those people.
To date I am on week four of the nine-week grocery shopping list. I am buying for two people and a cat.
The cost to date is;
$33.84
$15.26
$23.81
$14.45
$87.36
On week two I did get a box of Motts fruit chews that are not on the list for high calorie comfort food.
The costs shown do not include the Cat food @ 21.67 or week three toothpaste and toothbrushes. We already have a sizeable collection of them.
Of note. I am not purchasing baby food or diapers. I don’t need them.
I am purchasing all of the paper goods, plastic ware, plastic bags/containers and garbage bags just to get the cost established for those of you who are interested.
The grocery list is for a basic three-day food supply.
This is your 80% solution. Once you have completed this list for the number of people you are responsible for, you can come back at some point and fine tune it.
This list is intended to be the minimum stock you have in your household. Depleting your food and water stores below this minimum threshold is a no-no. Do not do it.
If your intent is to simply box up the food in anticipation. I would recommend rotating the food stock every six months. You can give to the community food bank and get the tax write off.
Till next time
