Prep #9 Multipurpose Survival Products/Supplies
Heres an introductory look at household items that have many uses. This is by no means an exhaustive list of all their benefits.
Baking Soda: toothpaste, deodorant, cleanser, deodorizer, treat insect bites, relieve skin irritation, antacid, air freshener, control insects.
White Vinegar: cleanser, deodorizer, sanitizer, disinfectant, eliminate insects, soothe sore throats, kills germs.
Unscented Household Bleach: disinfect water, kill viruses and germs, clean mold and mildew, general cleaning and sanitation.
Hydrogen Peroxide: topical antiseptic, all-purpose cleaner, deodorant, mouth rinse, treat toothaches, fruit and vegetable wash.
Honey: calorie-dense super energy food, sweetener, wound and burn care, antiseptic, relieves sore throats and coughs.
Organic Virgin Coconut Oil: toothpaste, deodorant, cooking, moisturizer
Salt: food preservation, cooking, teeth cleaner, deodorizer, treats insect bites, and soothe sore throats.
Isopropyl (Rubbing) Alcohol: degreaser, cleanser, disinfectant, air freshener
Olive Oil: calorie-dense food, moisturizer, shaving oil, lubricant, or just use it to cook a meal.
Petroleum Jelly: moisturizer, skin and lip protectant, treat burns.
Baby Oil: shaving gel, ear cleaner, lubricant, and massage oil.
After reviewing the items listed above Ive noticed they fall into four primary categories.
- Personal Care & Sanitation
- Cleaning & Disinfecting
- First Aid
- Food Preparation
These are very important categories because they are directly influential in the overall health and wellbeing of those youve prepared for. And these items can come in handy when the local grocery store and pharmacy have already been gutted.
But, are these the only items that are readily available with an alternate use?
Did a little Google Fu and found a few other items I thought would be useful to share. Please keep in mind that these have not been verified and are presented for entertainment and educational purposes only.
Cinnamon; Ant repellent, sprinkle it around the house wherever you have an ant issue. Then find out why you have an ant issue and clean it up.
Alka Seltzer; Fishing Bait, drop a few tables into the water around your fishing hole. Im not certain about the legality of this one. You might want to contact your local fish & game office first.
Aspirin; Itch Reliever, Im thinking you grind it up, add a little water to make a paste then apply it topically to the mosquito/bug bite area.
Aluminum Foil; Scissor Sharpener, Fold a sheet of foil several times then cut through with your dull scissors to sharpen them.
Lemon Juice; Surface disinfectant
Newspaper; Deodorize food containers, stuff a balled-up piece of newspaper into a plastic food container, lunch box or thermos, seal it, and let sit overnight.
Baking Soda; Fight class-B fires (flammable liquids, such as gasoline, oil, and grease). Baking soda can be used to smother only a small flame. Settle a stomach during occasional indigestion. Stir 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda into 1/2 cup of water and drink for a safe and effective antacid.
Salt; Remove dirt from leafy vegetables, such as spinach. Wash the vegetables in a bath of salt water.
Lotion Bottle; To Conceal Valuables, keep valuables handy and hidden in a Sun Tan Lotion bottle. Will probably require some preparation of the empty bottle first.
Three Liter Jug (Ocean Spray); Additional water storage. Be sure to clean thoroughly prior to use.
Toothpaste; Itch Reliever, place a small dab on the affected area.
Mustard; Burn (Minor) pain reliever
OK at some point the lists get redundant and the uses are not really relevant for the prepared individual.
Do you have a good alternate use for everyday household items? Let us know. A reply is welcome.
