Tip of the Day – Clarity

Tip of the Day for Friday, July 8th, 2022

Why is clarity important?

If things are unclear, it is tough for us to see, hear or know what is going on.

Those of you who have been following along know that I have an upcoming virtual summit titled leaders communicate clearly, how to use our words to let people know what it is we need or want to happen.

Some of you also know that I have been on a transcontinental drive from Clearwater, FL, to the San Francisco Bay area, I am still on that drive right now, and it is essential to have noticeably clear lights so we can see where we’re going. I will show you a little tip on what I did to make my headlights clear so I could see the road better.

I am sure many of you have fogged up discolored plastic headlight covers, making the light coming out of your lamps dim and less bright. And we often wonder, well, how I can fix that. Here is what I did.

Disclaimer: Daniel Kilburn and Emergency Action Planning LLC accepts no responsibility for your use, misuse, or failure to use any of the techniques shown below to clean your headlight covers.

NOTE: I am not promoting OFF Deep Woods Insect Repellent. It is just what I have.

A little-known fact is that insect spray that contains DEET will clear off your plastic headlight cover quite effectively. Below is a before and after left and right picture of what it looks like after using the DEET and wiping it off.

A cautionary note. As you see, I have blue painter’s tape surrounding the plastic lens cover on which I will be using the insect spray containing DEET.

The reason is that the insect repellent’s chemical melts off a layer of plastic, making the cover so clear. Yes it chemically melts the plastic.

If you do this, protect your paint job so you do not destroy your car paint around the headlights.

The sequence of events:

  1. Clean your headlight covers with mild soapy water, rinse and wipe dry.
  2. Protect the paint surrounding the headlight lens covers with blue painter’s tape, and mask additionally with newspaper.
  3. Wear disposable nitrile gloves. Using a clean, folded white T-shirt, Apply the DEET insect spray.
  4. Apply and wipe repeatedly until you have achieved the desired clarity of your headlight lens cover. Allow drying.
  5. Apply a liberal coat of car Polish to the lens covers and buff them until they are bright and shiny. This will protect the lens covers for a more extended period.
  6. Remove the blue painters’ tape and thoroughly clean the surrounding area of any accidental contact with the insect spray.

There you have it, clear, clean lenses that will last quite a while. The last time I did this, it lasted for about a year.

Stay tuned for the upcoming Leaders Communicate Clearly virtual summit on 20 August 22.

Till next time
